Outside/In Vs. Competitors

Unlike our competitors Outside/In does not use any Synthetic Preservatives, Genetically Modified Ingredients, Fillers or Additives.

  • Synthetic Preservatives:  such as the parabens or urea.  Mineral cosmetics are inorganic pigments with no liquid or oils added; therefore they do not need preservation.  They are basically crushed rocks that have been in the earth since creation.

  • Genetically Modified Ingredients (GMO): Process used to change the molecular structure of a product. Some skin care products that can genetically modified include: ascorbic acid, citric acid, mulberry (used to make chlorophyll), soy protein and corn syrup-based ingredients, glycerine and sorbitol

  • Fillers: Any low cost ingredient that is added to a product to give the illusion of more volume but serves mostly to dilute the properties of the product. Example: Water, Talc, or Rice Powder

  • Additives: any substance added to a product to preserve flavour, improve its taste or appearance. Potentially cancer-causing color additives color additives include: Red No. 8, No. 9 and No. 19, and Orange No. 17. Cancer Causing preservatives include: Parabens, Urea and GMO ingredients

There are many ingredients found in cosmetics that are not used by Outside/In. Here are some ingredients found commonly in our competitors products. It is recommended you review our more comprehensive, Ingredients to Avoid and consider purchasing “A Consumer’s Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients” by Ruth Winter.

BISMUTH OXYCHLORIDE: Grey-white powder with a bright metallic luster. Thought to have a low toxicity when ingested but may cause allergic reactions when applied to the skin.

BENZOATE: Widely found in cosmetics. Associated in causing asthma and eczema. Found on the Canadian Hotlist.

CARMINE:  Bright pink/red extract from the carmine beetle in South America, has been connected to heart problems.

COLLAGEN: An insoluble fibrous protein that is too large to penetrate the skin. The collagen found in most skin care products is derived from animal skin and ground up chicken feet.  This ingredient forms a layer of film that may suffocate the skin.

DIMETHICONE: silicone oil, white, viscous, used as an ointment based ingredient.

HYBRID SUNFLOWER SEED OIL: This is a genetically modified (GMO) ingredient.

PARABEN (METHYL PROPYL BUYTL and ETHYL PARABEN): Used as preservatives to inhibit microbial growth to extend products' shelf life. Contain highly toxic formaldehyde-releasing ingredients which are carcinogenic, increasing the risk of cancer in both men and women.

LAURYL PCA: Emollient with moisturizing properties. Thought to be related to SODUIM LAURYL (LAURETH) SULFATE (SLS or SLES), inexpensive additive found in shampoos, toothpastes, bubble baths and lotions. Extremely irritating, SLS causes skin irritations, itchiness, cracking, dandruff and infections in children (from bubble bath). The national Toxicology Program classifies it as a skin and eye irritant.

LECITHIN: group of yellow-brownish fatty substances occurring in animal and plant tissues, and in egg yolk. High in choline, people who chronically take more than 3.5 grams of choline per day occasionally have experienced side effects, including low blood pressure, marked by fainting or dizziness.

MAGNESIUM SILICATE (TALC): a natural mineral found and lung irritant, Talc is a slippery, finely powdered mineral that absorbs moisture. It is widely used in makeup and body powders. Talc has been linked to ovarian and lung cancer. It is NOT biodegradable. Toxic by inhalation.

MAGNESIUM STEARATE: Average coverage, matte, high adhesion mineral. Used to increase adhesion in some mineral makeup formulas.

NYLON-12:  Synthetic material used as a fiber in mascara or as a molding compound to shape cosmetics. Also used as a thickener and opacifier. Can cause allergic reactions.

POLYQUATERNIUM-51: Quaternary Ammonium Compound, synthetic derivatives, all are considered toxic depending on dose a concentration, irritant to eyes and mucous membrane, ingestion can be fatal.

PHENYL TRIMETHICONE: substituted silicone fluid for use in cosmetic and hair care formulations. Used to provide gloss and sheen.

PHENOXYENTHANOL: Diluted version of Phenol, obtained from Coal Tar. Phenol can cause fatal poisonings through skin absorption, ingestion of even a small amount can cause nausea, vomiting and respiratory failure.

RETINYL PALMITATE: The ester of Vitamin A and palmitic acid. Found on the Canadian HOTLIST.

SODIUM CHONDROITIN SULFATE: present in connective tissue such as skin arterial walls and heart valves, used as a moisturizing agent in cosmetics

SODIUM PCA: Naturally occurring component of the human skin, claimed to increase softness. Concluded to be safe except when used in cosmetics containing nitro sating ingredients.

SODIUM HYALURONATE: derived from hyaluronic acid: found in skin cartilage, umbilical cords, testes and synovial fluid. Used as a skin conditioner.

UREA (IMIDAZOLIDINYL and DIAZOLIDINYL): both are very common in cosmetic preservatives after the parabens. IU and DU are often found in baby shampoos, lotions and creams. IU and DU are also known to cause dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Also may cause joint pain, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pain, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness, loss of sleep, or even function as asthma triggers. Serious side effects include the weakening of the immune system, and, as usual, cancer. Stay away from this product.

ZEA MAYS (CORN STARCH): Used as filler. May cause allergic reactions including: skin rashes and asthma

ZINC STERATE: Used for its adhesive properties, inhalation of powder may cause lung problems or produce death in infants resembling those caused by talc but more severe.
